Menendez: Hugin Support for Trump, Kavanaugh Trumps NJ, Women, Civil Rights

Menendez for Senate and Ryan Alexander · October 5, 2018

New Brunswick, NJ – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez released the following statement on greedy, drug company CEO Bob Hugin’s support of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh:

“Bob Hugin ended exactly where he began on another Trump Supreme Court pick—with Trump, against women, against New Jersey’s values and for overturning Roe v. Wade, weakening gun safety and gutting environmental protections.   Hugin is a coward who tries to duck, dodge and mislead New Jerseyans, only to reveal himself with his support of Brett Kavanaugh as the true Trump-loving extreme conservative he is.  Hugin talks a good game on issues like choice but backs Supreme Court nominees like Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch who have been vetted to make sure they’ll overturn Roe v. Wade.  He masquerades as a moderate pretending to support access to affordable health care and protecting patients with pre-existing conditions, only to back nominees who will repeal the ACA.  He claims to be pro-environment, yet supports nominees who will undermine clean air and clean water protections from the bench.  Bob Hugin claims to be a ‘different kind of Republican,’ but he’s no different than all the others—too afraid to stand up to Donald Trump and too willing to do his bidding.  Bob Hugin will never be on our side.

“Bob Hugin, who has his own history of discrimination against women, supports a president, who admitted to sexually assaulting women, and his Supreme Court nominee, who has been credibly accused of sexual assault.  To this day, Hugin has refused to say whether he believes Dr. Christine Blasey Ford or any of Brett Kavanaugh’s accusers.  He stands by Kavanaugh and Trump even though a Justice Kavanaugh threatens women’s, LGBTQ, voter, worker, and civil rights.  Not even Kavanaugh’s partisan, intemperate rant—unfitting of a Supreme Court justice—before the Judiciary Committee gives Hugin pause.  As he has said, there isn’t anything that would say to him that he wouldn’t vote to confirm Kavanaugh.  That’s not a ‘different kind of Republican’ but a Trump Republican to the core.

“I am proud to stand up for New Jersey values, for women and for equal justice under the law.  New Jerseyans demand a senator who will fight for them and what we believe in and stand up for what’s right even when it’s unpopular or against your own party, not a Trump stooge like Bob Hugin.  The stakes in this election couldn’t be higher and it’s never mattered more.”
